Microscope in endodontics

...or saving teeth does not depend on microscope

Those patients, who have ever been in our clinic, know that we are passionate about saving teeth. As long as it makes sense to treat a tooth and gives us the chance to keep it, we do. We could say it is a family tradition.

A dental microscope does not make an endodontist. Like all the other fields of dentistry, endodontics also improved a lot in the past decades. Many new instruments were developed to make endodontic treatments more accessible and practical.

One of the most important development is the dental endo motor. This rotary motor makes faster and more precise treatments and decreases the possibility of root infection. Also, the materials of the needle we use for the treatment has been changed. With the appearance of NiTi needles, the incidence rate of needle breakage has been dramatically decreased. In addition, the NiTi needles’ flexibility makes it possible to treat as bent channels as visible in this picture. Another instrument that makes our life easier and used in our daily routine is called the apex locator. This machine shows us where to find the end of the channel without infecting or damaging the tissues around it. CbCTCbCT recording became also a very important technology in dentistry. It is an easy way to get a 3D recording from the tooth and better understand the questionable tooth. And the CBCT scan uses a lower dose of radiation than a regular CT scan.

The endodontic treatment itself does not guarantee success. It is just a possible treatment to save an infected tooth.

Just as in other fields of medicine, microscopes appeared in dentistry too. It is beyond any argument that microscopes have significant benefits. The ergonomic advantages help doctors avoid back pain and give doctors who use the instrument a professional outlook. In modern endodontics, we are looking for extra canals, and microscopes can provide a better look to the opening of them. However, an experienced dentist who knows where to look for the channels can find them easily.

„If you can not see without a microscope, you should not treat it .”

The other problem with the microscopes is the bending of the channels. If all the channels we treat would be straight, then we could look at the apical part of the teeth with proper lightening and microscope. But in real life, it is never like that. So the microscope's uses are negligible compared to the other instruments I listed before.

In our clinic, we use all the instruments that make the process of saving teeth more manageable and more effective. We do save teeth without a microscope.
